Donald Trump and Joe Biden exchanged warm greetings at Tuesday’s presidential campaign – then immediately started arguing. Democratic nominee Biden raised his hands in a greeting as he saw Trump walk onto the stage, and said ‘How you doing?’
Trump answered: ‘How you doing?’, with Biden responding: ‘I’m alright.’ There was a further cordial moment in an otherwise vicious campaign when Biden said ‘Thank you for doing this,’ to Trump as he answered his first question.
President Trump answered in kind, saying: ‘Thank you Joe.’ But the mood soon soured as Biden and Trump began arguing over their plans for US healthcare insurance and coronavirus, despite moderator Chris Wallace asking the men questions about the US Supreme Court.
Trump accused Biden of being a far left-wing politician over its plan for universal healthcare insurance, saying: ‘Your party wnts to go socialist, socialist medicine.
Biden hit back at the claim, saying his centrist beliefs would ultimately dictate ihs policies, saying: ‘I am the Democrat party right now.’
Trump went on to interrupt Biden with a vicious personal attack, telling Biden: ‘You graduated last in your class, not first in your class.’
Biden attempted to weather the onslaught of attacks, then turned to the audience and said: ‘Folks do you have any idea what this clown’s doing?…He doesn’t have a plan – this man doesn’t know what he’s talking about.’
The two men will be given two minutes each to answer a series of questions on topics including the economy, coronavirus and Donald Trump’s new Supreme Court Justice nominee Amy Coney Barrett.
Tuesday’s debate in Cleveland, Ohio, saw Trump and Biden avoid shaking hands because of social distancing measures. Its socially distanced audience was also banned from cheering or booing to try and lower the chances of passing on Covid-19.
