The current furlough scheme, which has provided financial support for one in every 13 workers in the UK, ends tomorrow after over seven months.
The furlough scheme will be replaced with the less generous Job Support Scheme on November 1.
Meanwhile, London could be placed under a tier three lockdown within a fortnight.
The capital saw a case rate of 151 per 100,000 people between October 17-23, up from 111 the week before – and the R rate could be as high as 2.9, meaning each infected person passes the bug to almost three others.
The news comes as the UK recorded another 280 coronavirus deaths and 23,065 new cases yesterday.
The total death toll now stands at 45,955, and there have been 965,340 official cases.
