Greater Manchester will be forced into the toughest tier three restrictions from midnight on Friday, after failing to reach a deal with local leaders.
The new measures were announced by Boris Johnson in a televised address yesterday, who also revealed the region will be awarded £22 million to support the latest round of closures.
The figure is substantially lower than the ‘bare minimum’ of £65 million requested by Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham to ‘protect the poorest’.
The mayor called No 10’s package ‘brutal.’
Meanwhile, the UK has recorded another 241 deaths and 21,331 cases as the country continues to battle the second wave of coronavirus.
The latest figures bring the total number of infections to 762,542 while 43,967 people have died since the start of the pandemic.
