Civil servants have reportedly been in talks for an extra-tough tier four of Covid restrictions in England in case the current three-tier system fails to make a dent in improving the current situtation.
A tier four could see restaurants and non-essential retailers forced to close in areas where tier three rules have not brought the virus under control, according to inews.
It comes as the UK reported on Saturday that another 174 people have died with coronavirus, while a further 23,012 cases have been confirmed.
The new figures bring the total number of deaths to 44,745 and cases to 854,010 since the pandemic began in March.
