The UK has seen a huge increase in coronavirus cases, with a further 12,872 positive tests reported on Saturday.

The figure is almost double the previous record for the number of cases recorded in a single day and brings the total to 480,017.

The steep rise in new cases is far higher than the 6,968 recorded yesterday and 6,042 seen last Saturday. The previous highest figure for a single day since the start of the pandemic was 7,143.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said a technical issue, which has now been resolved, had led to a delay in publishing ‘a number of cases’ between September 24 and October 1.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s doctor says he is breathing normally and has been ‘fever-free for 24 hours’ – but sources claim the president asked if he would die before he went into hospital, as the next 48 hours remain ‘critical’ for his recovery.

The president’s medical team said they were ‘extremely happy’ with his progress today after he was flown to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre near Washington DC to be treated for coronavirus on Friday.
