The World Health Organisation director said that now ‘is not the time for complacency’ despite recent positive developments in coronavirus vaccines.
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus addressed a press conference and said that although the vaccines are ‘encouraging news’, he is ‘extremely concerned’ about the surge in cases in Europe and the US.
Meanwhile, business figures, trade union leaders and left-wing politicians from across Europe have joined forces to urge world leaders to implement a four-day week in response to the coronavirus crisis.
A letter to leaders of the UK, US, Germany, Spain, New Zealand and the Republic of Ireland says: ‘Across the world, people are reimagining a better future post Covid-19 and overwhelmingly they want a better work-life balance.’
The news comes as the UK announced another 213 coronavirus deaths with 21,363 new cases on Monday.
