Black Friday 2020 is just days away, but is set to be a very different kind of bargain-hunting day from usual in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
With England currently in a four-week lockdown until December 2, many of the non-essential retailers who normally take part in the mega shopping day are currently closed – although that hasn’t stopped them from offering some serious early bargains to customers online.
With some stores remaining open however, which shops will be allowed to open on Black Friday – which falls on Friday November 27?
Here’s what you need to know…
What shops are allowed to open for Black Friday 2020?
Currently, only shops which are deemed essential are allowed to remain open.
This includes stores in the following categories:
- Food shops and supermarkets
- Pharmacies
- Garden Centres
- Hardware Stores
- Building Merchants
- Off-Licences
- Pet shops
- Bicycle shops
While not all of the above will be taking part in Black Friday, it’s likely that some of the stores which usually have Black Friday deals – such as supermarkets for example – will have them in store on this day.
Some including Tesco as well as Asda, are already offering early Black Friday deals on their websites.
It’s not known how their Black Friday deals will operate in-store but you should note that the shopping experience may well be different this year, with limits on the number of people in stores, social distancing measures in place and face coverings being worn.
Others have guidelines about only touching items you intend to buy – and if it’s clothing deals you’re after you won’t be able to try anything on.
It’s also worth noting that only England is currently affected by the closures – non-essential retail is open in Wales and Northern Ireland,
In Scotland, non-essential retail will be closed in areas which are going into tier four lockdown from this Friday.
These include City of Glasgow, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, East Dunbartonshire, West Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire, Stirling and West Lothian.
