‘Twas the day before Christmas and all through the towns, are buses and trains still making the usual rounds?

Everyone wants to celebrate time together this Christmas – something many sadly won’t be able to do after Boris Johnson announced London and areas in the South East will enter a newer, stricter tier four. after nearly nine months of social distancing and separation – and that includes the people who usually keep cities and towns moving.

Before we look at whether trains and buses run, it is important to note that if you live in a tier four or tier three area, you should avoid all non-essential travel.

If you can avoid leaving your home for anything other than an essential shop, for medical need or anything else on the list of exemptions, you should.

Trains do operate on Christmas Eve, but they may not run a full schedule.

Trainline’s website states that: ‘Train services will run as usual but may end a bit earlier on Christmas Eve.’

If you are planning on hopping on a train last minute, it’s best to check your journey beforehand.

Many train companies will have an app or website where you can plan or track a journey and note any changes to the service.

Trains do not run on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, however, there will be some coaches running.

Do buses run on Christmas Eve?

Like trains, buses will run but could operate on a reduced service.

On Christmas Eve, buses will typically start to wind down from early evening and there are usually no night buses.

There are no TFL or Aviva buses on Christmas Day, with many services returning for a reduced service from Boxing Day.
