GCSE and A-level students will go back to school next week

GCSE and A-level students will go back to school next week, a senior minister has confirmed.

Cabinet office minister Michael Gove told Sky News the staggered return of pupils will go ahead.

He said secondary school pupils in Years 11 and 13, as well as children of key workers, will return to school the week commencing January 4 while other pupils will return a week later.

‘We always keep things under review but teachers and head teachers have been working incredibly hard over the Christmas period since schools broke up in order to prepare for a new testing regime – community testing – in order to make sure that children and all of us are safer,’ Mr Gove said.

‘We do keep things under review but that is the plan.’

He added primary schools will all go back next week as normal.

Mr Gove’s announcement comes as pressure was growing on Boris Johnson last night from within his own party to keep pupils out of school at the start of the new term.

Education minister Gavin Williamson is reportedly in crunch talks with Downing Street officials and the Department for Education today to formulate plans for pupils’ return to school.
