A volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island has erupted, the U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed.

The Kilauea volcano began spewing ash into the sky late on Sunday local time within the within Halema’uma’u crater but it was not immediately clear how serious the incident is.

Footage shows dust clouds billowing into the night sky from a firey crater and crowds can be heard watching the incident unfold.

But the National Weather Service in the capital Honolulu warned of ash falling from the sky. It said excessive exposure can irritate the eyes and respiratory system.

Twitter user Ryan Kawailani Ozawa said: ‘Sunday night earthquake rocks Hawaii Island, and HalemaÊ»umaÊ»u Crater within KÄ«lauea Caldera suddenly erupts. 2020 isn’t going to go quietly.’

The mountain is located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
