Lockdown restrictions ‘may not be lifted until end of March’

Lockdown measures could remain in place until the end of March, Cabinet minister Michael Gove has said.

Mr Gove said that in two months’ time, ministers may be able to start easing some measures but ‘not necessarily all’ and will largely depend on how many have received the vaccine.

He said the mid-February review point will be focused primarily on the progression of the vaccine rollout rather than lifting the restrictions that were imposed on Monday evening.

When questioned if the measures will be in place until March, the duchy of Lancaster told Sky News: ‘You’re quite right to say that it takes some time immediately after vaccination to get the benefit of full immunity.

‘We will keep these constantly under review but you are absolutely right, we can’t predict with certainty that we will be able to lift restrictions in the week commencing the 15/22.

‘What we will be doing is everything we can to make sure that as many people as possible are vaccinated so we can begin progressively to lift restrictions.

‘I think it’s right to say that as we enter March we should be able to lift some of these restrictions but not necessarily all.’
