Antivirus software pioneer John McAfee reportedly died by suicide in his jail cell in Barcelona on Wednesday evening. He was 75.

The apparent suicide occurred just hours after reports that he would be extradited from Spain to the US to face federal charges, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais.

‘Everything points to suicide,’ the newspaper stated and cited Spanish justice department officials. Another newspaper in Spain, El Mundo, also reported McAfee’s death by apparent suicide.

McAfee, who was arrested in October, was pulled out of his jail cell. Police are investigating his death at Brians 2 Prison.

John McAfee appears at extradition hearing in Spain over tax

The Spanish High Court earlier on Wednesday had agreed to extradite McAfee, who in October got a 10-count indictment in the Western District of Tennessee for allegedly evading taxes on millions of dollars he earned. The tax-related criminal charges carried a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

Then in March, McAfee was hit with a separate indictment in Manhattan federal court for an alleged cryptocurrencies scheme he pushed on social media.
