Former President Donald Trump will hold his first rally since losing the 2020 presidential election on Saturday evening in Ohio. Trump’s rally starting at 7pm local time is in support of Republican congressional candidate Max Miller – but will also serve as a precursor to what could be a 2024 run for president.
Hundreds of Trump supporters lined up outside Lorraine County Fairgrounds in Wellington by noon and the crowd swelled to thousands hours before the kickoff, reminiscent of the massive campaign events Trump held while he was president.
Trump is campaigning on behalf of his former White House adviser Max Miller, who is challenging Republican incumbent Rep Anthony Gonzalez in the 2022 GOP primary for the 16th Congressional District. Gonzalez is one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his actions inciting the January 6 Capitol riot.
‘We’re giving tremendous endorsements,’ Trump told the conservative news channel Newsmax channel on Friday. ‘Fake Republicans, anybody that voted for the impeachment doesn’t get it. But there weren’t too many of them. And I think most of them are being… primaried right now, so that’s good. I’ll be helping their opponent.’
During the rally, Trump will call for election security, building on his claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him, and push for stricter policies at the border, a person with knowledge on the rally told The Hill. Trump will also attack the Biden administration’s spending and tackle the issue of energy independence, the person said.
‘He’s going to be hitting these major issues and the unwinding of a successful agenda,’ the source said.
The rally about 40 miles southwest of Cleveland will be the first of three public appearances by the 45th president. Trump will accompany Texas Governor Greg Abbott to the US-Mexico border on Wednesday and has another rally slated in Sarasota, Florida, on July 3, complete with fireworks.
