The heatwave which has been baking the UK could also play havoc with your WiFi signal if your hub is left in direct sunlight for too long.
Temperatures have been hovering around the 30°C mark for the past few days, prompting Virgin Media to warn customers to keep routers in cooler areas in their homes.
The broadband provider says on its website: ‘Nobody wants hot hub summer! Although we test our hubs carefully at a range of temperatures, they are better off out of bright sunlight, just like your phone or laptop.
‘But that doesn’t mean you should stick the hub in a cupboard or hidden behind your TV either.’
Virgin Media has reported ‘no widespread issue’ with its routers, but has posted a number of ‘top tips for a strong, reliable connection this summer’.
It states: ‘If the hub gets too hot, it could slow down your connection or even grind to a halt altogether.
‘Good placement of the Hub could also mean greater WiFi reach.’
WiFi routers, like other electrical appliances, generate heat while they are working, meaning any additional heat can cause problems.
They should ideally be kept in cool, shaded areas, but not hidden behind larger items of furniture, like cupboards and units, which could end up blocking your signal.
Anyone cooling down with a fan might wish to place the hub in the path of the airflow.
