The future king intended to travel from Scotland to meet Harry, 36, in London.
But he was ‘dreading’ the meeting amid fears his words might be misconstrued, the Mail on Sunday claims.
Charles and Harry were said to be in regular contact following the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s second child, daughter Lilibet.
It is not known whether the one-to-one dinner actually took place – with earlier reports suggesting Charles intended to ‘leave the boys to it’.
The statue was revealed at Kensington Palace on July 1, what would have been Princess Diana’s 60th birthday.
Harry and William, 39, united for the ceremony to unveil the monument.
They appeared relaxed and happy to be in each other’s company, during their first public outing together since the funeral of their grandfather, Prince Philip.
But Harry returned home to be with Meghan, 39, less than 24 hours after the statue unveiling.
There was ‘no heart to heart’, it has been suggested – with Harry said to have departed after a polite drink.
