A major supermarket’s vegan lasagne ready meal has been pulled from shelves after it was found to contain beef, pork and dairy.
Sainsbury’s urgently recalled its ‘Love Your Veg’ butternut squash and lentil lasagne and has offered customers a full refund.
The product with a use-by date of July 17 was packed with the filling for the chain’s Bolognese Melt.
This meant it was contained pork, beef and milk – posing a health risk to anyone allergic to one of these ingredients.
Kevin Quinn said: ‘Wow @sainsburys – if there’s one thing I rely on with the vegan ready meals, it’s that they’re vegan!
‘What assurance can you give me that this is an isolated aberration and not endemic sloppy manufacture?’
Rebecca Beardmore said some people were ‘making light’ of what was a ‘pretty serious’ error.
She said: ‘For people who avoid dairy for allergies it’s pretty serious – and personally if I ate meat by accident I’d be both very sick and upset.
‘Hopefully bolognese mince is kept far, far away from the product in future.’
Another person said: ‘Stories like this are not helping my fear that one day a lot of fake meats will be revealed, soylent green-style, to have been real meat.’
Jean Vernon said: ‘Sorry @sainsburys but selling a #VEGAN lasagne that contains PORK & BEEF & milk is not an inconvenience! It’s a total disgrace!
‘Utterly disgusted by this! How on earth did this slip under your radar? #sabotage?’
Sainsbury’s apologised and issued a recall notice via the Food Standards Agency.
It read: ‘Sainsbury’s is recalling Sainsbury’s Love Your Veg Butternut Squash and Lentil Lasagne because it contains milk which is not mentioned on the label.
‘This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.
‘The product also contains pork and beef which are also not mentioned on the label as the product has been incorrectly packed with Sainsbury’s Bolognese Melt.’
