President Joe Biden in his first address on Afghanistan since the Taliban declared victory in Kabul admitted that the collapse occurred faster than he and authorities believed it would. However, Biden stood by his decision to pull American troops.

‘The truth is this did unfold more quickly than we anticipated,’ Biden said, speaking from the White House on Monday afternoon.

Biden returned earlier on Monday from the Camp David presidential retreat, where he spent the weekend with his family as dramatic images of the Taliban’s takeover emerged.

They were Biden’s first public remarks on the Afghanistan collapse in six days.
