Who doesn’t love that endorphin rush you get whenever a post, a tweet or a selfie starts raking in likes and comments from your friends online?

Sometimes though, you may put out a great joke, a creative TikTok or a stunning holiday snap on Instagram, only for it to go largely unnoticed, failing to make the splash you hoped for.

As with most successful endeavours in this world – be it performing music, cooking, or even posting on social media – timing is everything.

Finding that perfect time to post content may seem like an impossible task in the fast-moving world of social media, but results from a recent study could be about to change all that.

Here’s everything you need to know about choosing the perfect time to hit ‘send’…

A recent study conducted by comparethemarket.com looking at app consumption in the UK revealed details on the perfect publishing times across multiple apps.

People are most likely to use and post on Instagram and Facebook between 4.30-6.30pm, which aligns with when most people finish work.

Users are most active on TikTok and Snapchat after 9pm, making the late evening the ideal time to post on those two platforms.

The study also provided insight into the apps that proved to be the most popular during the pandemic.

While TikTok proved to be the most downloaded app of 2020/21, Facebook remains the most popular, with 68% of Brits checking the app every day, followed by TikTok and Instagram.

Commenting on the research, Holly Cox, head of digital at comparethemarket.com, said: ‘There were many moments throughout lockdown where we had no option but to communicate with our loved ones through our phones, so it comes as no surprise that messaging platforms and social media apps are the most downloaded over the 2020-2021 period.

‘With social media algorithms being a big topic of discussion in the digital world, it’s interesting to see when we are most active and when the optimum time to post on each channel is for engagement, ultimately revealing opportunities to increase views, likes, comments, and shares,’ she added.

Another discovery made in the study included the reveal that Sheffield is the city that uses social media the most across the UK, with 61.5% of the population logging onto their favourite apps at least once a day.

Birmingham and Glasgow followed closely behind, in second and third place.
