A gunman opened fire inside a Kroger grocery store in a Memphis, Tennessee suburb on Thursday, killing one person and injuring 13 others before he shot and killed himself.
‘It breaks my heart to have to stand before you today,’ Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane said in a press conference. ‘We’ve had an incident here in Collierville that has occurred all over the country.’
The shooting was reported around 1.30 p.m. at the supermarket located 30 miles east of Memphis, Tennessee. Authorities arrived minutes later at 1.34 and began helping victims.
Those who were injured were taken to area hospitals and their conditions range from minor to extremely serious, authorities said.
‘This is the most horrific event to happen in Collierville history,’ Lane said.
Both customers and employees were shot, Glenda McDonald, an employee at Kroger told FOX13 Memphis.
While McDonald wasn’t injured, she was shaken. She only heard a gunshot and ran out the door, she told the Fox affiliate.
Two medical helicopters were flown into the area to evacuate victims.
The entire front portion of the store’s parking lot is filled with law enforcement officials, who are working across multiple jurisdictions at the scene.
Located at 240 New Byhalia Road, Kroger sits in a strip mall near a Wendy’s, a Walgreens and Target, and is across Byhalia from Corky’s Ribs and BBQ.
According to FOX13 Memphis, the scene has been secured by police and that there is no longer a threat to the public.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s office is helping with the investigation. Law enforcement officials believe the gunman acted alone.
