A young man jumped off an apartment building in Yonkers, New York, and landed on an elderly man standing 12 stories below – killing them both.

A 25-year-old jumped from the roof of Cromwell Towers apartment complex just before 6pm on Monday evening, according to Yonkers Police.

The man who jumped was described as ‘distraught’ in a press release shared to Yonkers Police Department’s social media pages.

‘It’s just a very tragic thing,’ Yonkers Police Detective Lieutenant Dean Politopoulos told Metro.co.uk. ‘We don’t believe there was any foul play, it was just a very tragic and unfortunate set of events.’

Yonkers police are calling the 25-year-old man’s death an apparent suicide.

While falling 12 stories below to the concrete roof of a parking garage, he struck a 61-year-old man. Both men died on the scene of the incident, which occurred at 77 Locust Hill Avenue, according to the police.

While the department normally does not report suicides to the public, according to Politopoulos, information was shared because a second individual died.

Police have not shared the names or hometowns of either of the deceased men, nor do they plan to, Politopoulos said.

Witnesses and family members are being interviewed and the investigation is ongoing, police said. Surveillance video from the scene is also being reviewed by police officials as they continue their probe.

Police at the time said they would not be providing any additional information.

‘The incident appears to be a tragic situation and the investigation is on-going,’ the police department said in a statement.

‘The City of Yonkers and Yonkers Police Department offers its sincere condolences to the families of both men.’
