Halloween is almost here so we’re getting in the spirit of all things spooky.

It’s likely by now you’ll have sorted your Halloween costume and makeup, but what about food and drink?

Thankfully, there are lots of Halloween-themed treats to sink your teeth into, including a certain boozy beverage that seems incredibly apt for the occasion – a Zombie cocktail.

So, if you’re having friends over this weekend, serve them up one of these – not only will you be bang on the theme, but the tasty drink will impress too.

The history of the Zombie cocktail recipe is pretty interesting too – as back in the 1900s it was considered so strong that bartenders were only allowed to serve two per customer.

In terms of origins, the cocktail was the brainchild of Donn Beach – who created the drink for a customer complaining about a bad hangover.

According to the original recipe, the cocktail included three different kinds of rum, lime juice, falernum, Angostura bitters, Pernod, grenadine, and ‘Don’s Mix’ – a combination of cinnamon syrup and grapefruit juice.

But over the years numerous variations have come to light.

The combination of fruity flavours masks the high alcohol content – so it’s easy to see why drinks were limited with this particular cocktail.

Fancy giving it a go?

We have a recipe from Hawksbill Caribbean Spiced Rum, which calls for two different varieties of the spirit.

Zombie cocktail ingredients: What you’ll need:

  • 25ml spiced rum
  • 25ml white rum
  • 25ml lime juice
  • 100ml pineapple juice
  • 1 tsp grenadine

How to make the Zombie cocktail:

  1. Shake the rums and fruit juices in a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Strain into a hurricane glass with ice, then slowly pour in the grenadine to colour the drink.
  3. Garnish with pineapple and a cherry.

Of course, if rum isn’t your spirit of choice you could always try your hand at a pumpkin martini or a ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ cocktail.
