Meghan Markle has gifted charity workers Starbucks vouchers worth $25 (£18) to show them that she ‘has their back.’
The Duchess of Sussex sent the ‘classy’ gesture to those working to pass landmark legislation that would introduce paid parental leave in the US for the first time.
Staff at PL+US are on the cusp of winning their national campaign that would see every worker offered family and medical leave by 2022.
Historic legislation is moving through Congress, which would make 12 weeks off available to most employees.
Campaigners are working flat-out to try to make their vision a reality and Meghan wanted to thank them for their hard work.
Neil Sroka, the director of communications PL+US, wrote on Twitter: ‘The Duchess of Sussex (aka #MeghanMarkle) bought everyone at @PaidLeaveUS a few cups of coffee while we’re working overtime to #SavePaidLeave.
‘Unbelievably classy… and necessary. Truly honored to know she has our backs in the fight to win’.
Meghan previously showed her support for the campaign by writing politicians in the US ‘as a mom’.
She said her and husband Prince Harry were ‘overwhelmed’ after the birth of their second child, Lilibet, on June 4.
The couple were able to take 20 weeks off in line with the policies of their charitable foundation, Archewell.
Meghan said she wants all other parents to enjoy the same privileges, as the US is one of the few countries in the world that doesn’t guarantee paid sick leave or maternity or paternity pay.
Her letter was addressed to House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate majority leader Charles Schumer and written on official header paper, bearing the couple’s titles.
Meghan said she was writing ‘on behalf of millions of Americans’ as she called for the politicians to back a national policy on paid leave, rather than it being left to individual companies to decide.
