Rollercoaster grinds to a halt in the snow as blizzard batter North of England

A fun day at the fair turned into a misery for families today after an iconic rollercoaster got stuck in the snow.

The Big Dipper at Blackpool Pleasure Beach came grinding to a halt in bad weather this morning.

People were left stranded in grim conditions when the famous ride ran out of steam.

One person at the front of the ride took the opportunity to take a selfie as they waited to get off.

Posting on a local facebook group, Daniel Leach said: ‘We just stalled on Big Dipper in the snow and had to be evacuated.’

He added: ‘Rolled up into the brakes and the rear of the train was half way down the hill.

‘Great experience but freezing cold. Best front row ride ever.’

In a statement, Blackpool Pleasure Beach confirmed the rollercoaster came to a ‘slow stop a short distance from the station platform’.

They said: ‘Passengers were all escorted safely from the ride to the platform a short walk (approx 50ft) away and we thank them for their patience.

‘The ride is reopening for the rest of the day and the park is open until 5pm this afternoon.’

Large parts of northern of England faced blizzard-like conditions on Saturday – and the weather doesn’t look like getting much better any time soon.

Saturday brought snowy weather to parts of Yorkshire and strong winds to the south coast, with a calmer evening forecast.

Gusts of up to 70mph are set to sweep the UK in the coming days, similar to what some areas experience during Storm Eunice. 

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for wind covering most of the UK on Sunday and 

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst urged Britons to brace for more windy weather.

Speaking on Saturday, he added: ‘We will see a slight easing in the wind over the evening time tonight, but it’s not long before they pick up again tomorrow to lead to another windy day across the UK.

‘This will have an impact on the clearing up process over the course of the day.’
