April is a month of celebration, as the weather finally warms up (hopefully), the Easter weekend happens (complete with all the chocolate one must eat) and we’re given an abundance of extra days off work.
Another event that takes place during this month is St George’s Day, also known as The Feast of George.
However well-known the day may be, not many people actually know why we celebrate the patron saint of England.
It is claimed that he slayed a dragon (though there isn’t actually any proof) and every year, many Christian churches honour his bravery.
Just when is St George’s Day though, and do we get a day off for it?
When is St George’s Day 2022 and is it a Bank Holiday?
St George’s Day is celebrated on the 23 April, which is widely recognised as the day the saint died in AD 303.
The day doesn’t just carry significance in the UK; George is also a patron saint in Ethiopia, Georgia and Portugal, as well as cities including Beirut and Freiburg.
It is an annual event that has had a significant place in the Christian church for several centuries and it has become a day when people around England celebrate their heritage.
Normally, St George’s Day isn’t a Bank Holiday, which means that those of us celebrating in the UK will still have to go to work, unless we specifically book the day off.
However this year April 23 falls on a Saturday – meaning most of us will have the day off.
And while events have been somewhat curtailed over the past couple of years in the wake of the pandemic, celebrations are set to return to London this year with an event in Trafalgar Square, promising markets, food, activities and performers.
