A 10-year-old girl was arrested Tuesday after she allegedly shot a woman who was arguing with her mother, police said.
An argument between Lashun Rodgers, 41, and Lakrisha Isaac, 31, broke out during a Memorial Day barbecue at an apartment complex in Orlando Florida, which quickly became deadly when Isaac handed her daughter a purse with a pistol.
The two women were apparently airing grievances over a prior dispute that was related to a social media post, according to The Washington Post.
Isaac handed her daughter her purse that contained a pistol, according to a police affidavit. As the argument became more tense, the 10-year-old fired two shots, hitting Rodgers in the head, police said.
Rodgers died in the shooting, which took place on May 30.
According to Rodgers’ boyfriend, who witnessed the altercation, the mother allegedly initiated a physical altercation by punching Rodgers, who then hit her back.
The boyfriend said he tried to break up the fight but Rodgers tried to ‘re-engage.’ The child then took out the gun and fired two shots at Rodgers. She allegedly yelled ‘she shouldn’t have hit my momma,’ the boyfriend told authorities.
The child, who has not been named due to her age, was arrested Tuesday and later placed in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families. The child’s mother is also in custody.
The State Attorney for Orange and Osceola Counties Monique H Worrell said her office is reviewing the case and will ‘consider all of the facts, including the age of the child, and all of the surrounding circumstances, when making a charging decision.’
‘We want to be clear in stating that no charging decision has been made by our office,’ Worrell said, noting that the incident was ‘one of the most tragic cases’ she has seen in her 22-year career.
