A schoolteacher and her two young children were found dead following a shooting in a suburban home.
Laura Moberley, 42, was discovered lifeless in her home in Horry County, South Carolina, on Wednesday. Her children, Eric Moberley, 11, and Emily Moberley, 8, were also deceased.
Police uncovered the grisly scene after responding to a welfare check at a home in Carolina Forest around 1.45pm. All three victims died around 6am that morning from gunshot wounds.
Authorities have not released information around who may have conducted the shooting.
‘Our community is hurting today, and that is undeniable,’ the Horry County Police Department stated. ‘We ask that you be kind to one another – you may not know who has been impacted by this tragedy.’
Laura worked as a teacher at Carolina Forest Elementary School, where she was hired in 2018 as a reading loss specialist. Emily was in third grade at the same school district, and Eric was in seventh grade.
‘We are at a loss for words after learning of the tragic incident that affected an entire family with ties to Horry County Schools,’ the district stated.
‘We lift our strongest prayers for the Moberley family and for everyone who knew them. We encourage our community to keep our students and staff in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.’
Carolina Forest is a small unincorporated community in Horry County, just north of Myrtle Beach.
The police investigation remains ongoing, but authorities do not believe there is any threat to the public. It is not clear if they have made any arrests related to the shooting.
Earlier this week, another strange small town killing occurred in a wheat field in North Dakota. A farm owner was found dead in his wheat combine alongside three of his workers in what investigators believe was a triple murder-suicide.
