Commuter ‘caved in’ station worker’s face for challenging him over his ticket

This is the horrifying moment an angry commuter brutally ‘caved in’ a train station guard’s face after being told he didn’t have the right ticket.

Michael Lucas launched the assault on Colin Spicer in February at Wigan Wallgate station after learning staff would not replace a £70 weekly pass he had lost earlier that day.

Footage showed the 32-year-old threatening Mr Spicer before pushing through the ticket barrier, grabbing him and punching him across the face before sauntering off.

The father-of-three, of Westhoughton, screamed at his victim: ‘I’ll kill you, I’ll rip your f*****g head off – you’re nothing but a little midget p***k with a little p***k, you d**k.’

Mr Spicer, 55, who was working on a zero hours contract for a security contractor, said the blow was so hard it was like being ‘struck by a baseball bat’.

The guard fell to the floor and suffered multiple ‘complex’ facial fractures including a broken jaw and fractures to his eye socket.

He now speaks with a lisp and struggles to eat properly as some nerves in his teeth and face are beyond repair.

Mr Spicer said: ‘I am back at work now but I am hyperaware that I must protect my face.

‘The slightest knock will cave my face back in and I have found myself moving away from large groups of people as I am worried I may get hit.’

Before the attack, Lucas, who had been drinking, hurled abuse at a female member of staff, which prompted the police to be called.

He then left but returned a short while later to launch the attack on Mr Spicer.

CCTV footage shows the bricklayer saying ‘let me through’ at the ticket barriers, which he then begun to scream and shout after his request was denied.

Mr Spicer said: ‘I was on my own at this point at the railway station and the next thing I saw the same man come in. He came straight towards me and hurled abuse and threatened me.’

Lucas fled the scene after the assault but was traced after he accidentally dropped his phone which contained his driver’s license and bank cards.

He was jailed for 28 months after he admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The RMT union helped raise £4,500 for Mr Spicer after learning he would receive little or no sick pay from his employers at Carlisle Support Service whilst off work with his injuries.

Sentencing Judge Tom Gilbart told Lucas. ‘It is utterly shameful that anyone let alone a father of young children should behave in this way.

‘You shouted insults at Mr Spicer then pushed your way through the ticket barrier, grabbed him around the throat and pushed him against a wall.

‘Other staff told you to stop and you then released your victim only to then punch him in the face.

‘He was an entirely innocent man doing his job and doing no more than his job yet you decided to attack him.

‘It was entirely unprovoked at a time when you were drunk. This was on any view appalling thuggery.’
