An overturned lorry has resulted in huge queues of traffic down the M11 this evening.

There have been warnings of ‘heavy congestion’ for those travelling in the area.

Those looking to catch evening flights from Stansted Airport should leave extra time to avoid delays.

Traffic reports, from near junction six, first emerged around 2.50pm.

Cars were originally blocked from passing at all as emergency services made their way to the scene.

National Highways for England tweeted: ‘Currently, traffic is unable to travel north on the #M11 from J6 and from the #M25 anti-clockwise J27. A lorry has overturned within #M11 J6.

‘Please plan ahead of your journey and consider other routes.’

The overturned lorry can still be spotted on motorway cameras on the M11.

Traffic is reportedly slowly trickling past now, but several areas still face huge tail-backs.

The traffic information service Inrix tweeted: ‘M11 Northbound blocked, queueing traffic due to overturned lorry at J6 M25 J27.

‘Congestion to before J5 (Loughton), with Southbound also heavily congested due to traffic diverting from the M25.

‘There are also delays through Epping Forest and Loughton.

‘Before 15:00, a lorry overturned and has come to rest sideways across the carriageway.

‘This will affect traffic heading towards Stansted Airport. Traffic leaving the M25 anticlockwise is forced into London, with M25 clockwise traffic remaining unaffected.’

The M11 spans 55 miles and runs north from the North Circular Road in South Woodford to the A14, northwest of Cambridge.
