Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that Liverpool will be placed under ‘tier three’ lockdown restrictions from Wednesday as coronavirus cases in the area continue to climb.

The restrictions for the highest tier include a ban on members of more than one household from mixing with one another in any setting indoors as well as private gardens, and closures for leisure centres, gyms, betting shops and casinos.

The Tier Three lockdown affects the local authority districts of Halton, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral, as well as the City of Liverpool.

Despite the high volume of cases in the capital, London has been spared of any new restrictions and remains in the lowest tier.

Meanwhile, a further 13,972 new cases of coronavirus were recorded on Monday.

There were also 50 deaths, bringing the country’s overall death toll to 42,875.
