Fake ‘robocalls’ give US voters wrong date for election day

Fake robocalls have been made to many Americans telling them to vote in the US presidential election the day after polls close.

Officials in Michigan reported on Tuesday that citizens of Flint, a predominantly black city, were receiving calls telling them to vote Wednesday, and not on election day. The calls are now being investigated by the FBI.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel urged voters in a tweet not to listen to the robocalls.

‘This is FALSE and an effort to suppress the vote,’ Nessel said. ‘No long lines and today is the last day to vote. Don’t believe the lies! Have your voice heard!’

Meanwhile, there were similar calls reported in Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas, but it is not clear if the same organization is behind all the attempts at voter suppression.

The messages in Nebraska reportedly told voters to ‘stay home and stay safe.’

Nebraska Secretary of State Robert Evnen reassured voters on Twitter that the polling places are open.

‘Our voters and our poll workers will be kept safe,’ he said. ‘Elections matter and your vote counts.’

Voter suppression has been a hot topic throughout this election, with Trump continuously questioning if the election will be rigged by the Democrats, although there is no evidence to support this claim.

In California, fake ballot boxes were set up and a drop box for early votes was burnt in Boston.

Polls have begun to close in some states for this year’s election, with early results in Indiana and Kentucky showing President Trump has held counties he won in 2016.
