Greggs to axe 820 jobs as pandemic sees sales plunge

Greggs is set to axe 820 jobs as the coronavirus pandemic continues to devastate the high street.

The chain – which employs 25,000 people in 2,000 shops – will be losing about 3% of its workforce. 

In the three months up until the end of September, the bakery’s sales were only 70% of what they were during the same period last year. 

Chief executive Roger Whiteside previously warned about redundancies in September, the Sun reports.

Stores in city-centres and near public transport have reportedly been hit the hardest, with fewer customers travelling to-and-from work.

Bosses are not looking at closing any stores but want to open new shops in locations where people can access stores by car. 

The company has already rolled out a click-and-collect delivery service to boost sales during lockdown. 

It comes as the Covid-19 pandemic leaves 782,000 people unemployed.

The country’s unemployment rate stands at 4.8% for the three months up until September – up 5% from the month before, according to the Office for National Statistics. 

WHSmith bosses are set to close 25 shops, leaving 200 jobs at risk, while Cafe Nero bosses are bringing in restructuring experts to try and keep stores open and prevent redundancies.

Pizza Express is closing 73 restaurants, placing 1,100 jobs at risk, while Wetherspoons is closing six pubs in airports resulting in around 450 job cuts.

Meanwhile, Marks and Spencer is planning to make 7,000 workers redundant over the next three months.
