What shops are classed as non-essential in the second national lockdown?

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that England will be under a national lockdown from Wednesday, November 4.

The country-wide lockdown comes as UK’s coronavirus cases topped the one million mark.

Non-essential businesses such as hairdressers and pubs will have to close their doors until December 2.

But what shops will have to close? Here is all you need to know.

What shops are classed as non-essential?

Non-essential shops have to close on Wednesday, November 4.

Non-essential shops include, but are not limited to:

  • Retail shops (like Primark and Clarks)
  • Electronics/tech shops (like Apple and Game)
  • Toy shops (like Hamley’s and the LEGO Store.)
  • Furniture shops (like IKEA)
  • Makeup shops (like Mac and KIKO)
  • Jewellery shops (like Tiffany’s and Pandora)
  • Department stores (like Debenhams and House of Fraser)

The above stores will have to miss out on the Black Friday Sales this year.

Please note that the lockdown rules only apply to England – Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales implement their own Covid-19 restrictions independently.

What shops can remain open?

Shops selling essential items may continue to operate throughout the lockdown, so long as Covid-19 secure measures are in a place.

These include:

  • Supermarkets
  • Pharmacies
  • Takeaways and food deliveries
  • Health shops
  • Medical services – eg, dentists
  • Vets
  • Newsagents
  • Pet shops
  • Hardware stores
  • Retail shops in hospitals
  • Petrol stations
  • Bicycle shops
  • Laundrettes and dry cleaners
  • Undertakers
  • Banks, building socities
  • Short-term loan providers, credit unions and cash points
  • Storage and distribtion centres
  • Post Offices
  • Car rental services and car parks near vital services such as supermarkets
  • Public toilets
  • Car garages and repair shops
  • Food banks and shelters

Unlike in Wales, essential shops in England are still allowed to sell non-essential items in their stores. This could include books, makeup, and clothes.
