Christmas might not have been as you imagined it, following the launch of new tier four restrictions in London and the South East.

Other parts of the country also face restrictive measures with indoor socialising only allowed on Christmas Day this year.

But, it wasn’t all bad: the trying year has meant that retailers and companies have realised the need to give employees a break this Christmas, with many agreeing to close on Boxing Day, eschewing the usual lucrative day for sale shopping.

Asda are one of the major supermarkets to announce they’ll be closed all day, releasing a statement stating ‘it was important for us to give as many of you as possible the opportunity to spend this time with those loved ones that you may not have not seen for many months.’

Which other shops will be closed this Boxing Day?

Asda aren’t the only ones to keep the doors shut this Boxing Day. Joining them are:

  • Marks and Spencer
  • Aldi
  • Wickes
  • Pets at Home
  • Home Bargains
  • The Entertainer
  • John Lewis (excluding the Trafford store, Manchester)
  • Waitrose (excluding some service stations)
  • Homebase

Though some other places will be open, many might be operating on reduced hours.

McDonald’s is one example, with the CEO emailing customers earlier in the month to confirm that restaurants will be opening later on Boxing Day this year, as well as closing earlier on New Year’s Eve.

If you did need to pop out and pick up a few supplies, other supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons will still be open.

They might be operating different hours today so check with your local store before heading out.
