Capitol Police have arrested a man ‘with a fake inaugural badge, a loaded handgun and more than 500 rounds of ammunition’.
Officers took Wesley Allen Beeler into custody on Friday after his pick-up truck was stopped at a checkpoint just north of the Capitol building in Washington DC, a law enforcement source told CNN.
Beeler, from Virginia, allegedly told police he had a Glock semi-automatic pistol in his car’s armrest shortly after 6.30pm. The gun was loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition and a round chamber.
He also had 509 rounds of ammunition, shotgun shells and a magazine for the handgun, according to a Metropolitan Police Department incident report seen by The New York Times.
Police arrested Beeler for possession of an unregistered firearm and possession of unregistered ammunition, along with other offences.
National Guard troops were sent to Capitol Hill after Trump supporters stormed the building on January 6 as a vote took place to affirm Joe Biden’s 2020 election win.
The violence and chaos left five people dead, including one police officer.
Around 100 people have been arrested since the riots, with the FBI still working to identify others who broke federal law.
