Canada has announced that fully vaccinated Americans will be allowed to enter the country in three weeks.
American citizens who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 for at least 14 days prior to traveling and meet other entry requirements can start crossing the border at 12.01am on August 9, the Public Health Agency of Canada said in a statement on Monday afternoon.
US citizens will need to complete the two-dose series for the Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca vaccines or the one-dose Johnson & Johnson jab, according to the Canadian government. Those are the vaccines currently accepted by the Canadian government.
American children under age 12 who are not vaccinated can enter Canada if they are accompanied by a ‘fully vaccinated parent, step-parent, guardian or tutor’, the health agency stated.
The announcement comes four days after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that fully-vaccinated Americans would be able to travel freely between the US and Canada beginning mid-August. Trudeau on Thursday did not disclose an exact date.
Fully vaccinated Americans are the first who will be allowed into Canada. Travelers from other countries will be allowed in beginning September 7 ‘provided that Canada’s Covid-19 epidemiology remains favorable’, the health agency stated.
‘Border measures also remain subject to change as the epidemiological situation evolves,’ the health agency stated.
‘As Canada begins to welcome fully vaccinated travelers from the U.S., the Government of Canada will continue to monitor the situation and provide updated travel advice for Canadians.’
Canada shut its borders to non-essential travel in March 2020 as the coronavirus outbreak became widespread globally.
