England has moved out of coronavirus lockdown as of today, with the country plunged into a strict tier system in its bid to keep Covid infection rates down.
With much of the country in either tier two or tier three – and just three areas making it into the less restrictive tier one – people are facing new rules which will see pubs forced to close for all but takeaway in tier three, and only allowed to remain open in tier two if they serve ‘substantial meals’.
Other places, such as hairdressers and non-essential retail have however been allowed to reopen in all of the tiers.
But just where are gyms allowed to open under the new rules?

Are gyms open in tier 2 and tier 3 areas?
Gyms remain open in all tiers, including tier three, however, there are stricter rules in place for those ‘high alert’ areas.
Under tier three rules, group classes are not permitted and organised indoor sports cannot take place indoors.
Outdoor sports and exercise classes can continue if the rule of six and social distancing measures are observed.
In tier two areas, organised indoor sport, physical activity and exercise classes will only be permitted if it is possible for people to avoid mixing with people they do not live with (or share a support bubble with).
Meanwhile, in areas observing tier one rules, classes are allowed to take place if the rule of six is followed.
The tiered system will be reviewed every 14 days, with the allocation dependent on a number of factors including each area’s case numbers, reproduction rate – or R number – and the current and projected pressure on the local NHS.
