The future king and the current prime minister were among those cheering on England tonight for the Women’s Euro 2022 final.

They were joined by millions of other fans both in the stands and at home, with Wembley Stadium sold out as people gathered outside just to be close to the action.

For the first two thirds of the match, it was tense with a nil-nil result going into the second half.

But the Lionesses took a lead with the first goal scored by Ella Toone moments after she came on as a substitute – prompting shouts of ‘Toone’ frokm the crowd.

The lead didn’t last for long, however, with Germany scoring an equaliser goal leaving the score current 1-1.

Germany’s captain and star player Alexandra Popp was ruled out of playing before kick-off due to an injury, but it hasn’t given the Lionesses an easy ride so far.

Earlier today, Prince William shared a ‘good luck’ video made with his daughter Princess Charlotte, aged seven.

In the recorded message, the Duke of Cambridge said: ‘We both want to wish the Lionesses the best of luck for tonight.

‘You’ve done amazingly well in the competition and we are rooting for you all the way.’

Filmed beside her dad in a garden, Charlotte added: ‘Good luck, I hope you win’.

Smiling at the camera, she then waved and said ‘bye’.

Princess Charlotte has previously told how she enjoys playing football, saying she is really good in goal.

But she wasn’t with her dad at the final this evening, as he was pictured without any of his children or wife Kate.

The official Twitter account for William and Kate retweeted a photo of crowds walking up to the stadium, captioned: ‘Let’s go @Lionesses, good luck #WEURO2022’.

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson shared a photo of himself watching the match on TV with daughter Romy and son Wilfred.

In a photograph posted on his Twitter account, Mr Johnson is facing away from the camera, holding Romy in his arms, while Wilfred is standing next to him.

Alongside the photograph he wrote: ‘We are all gripped here watching the @Lionesses! Come on England!’

Most notably, perhaps, were the thousands of girls excited to watch their team hopefully make history.

Pictures show women and girls wearing football T-shirts and covered in face paint waving Pride flags and personalised placards outside Wembley stadium.

Dozens of ticketless fans were watching the match on their phones outside the stadium, just wanting to be close to the action.

Craig Stephens, 58, and his wife Julie, 54, from Twickenham, south-west London, said: ‘We just wanted to be around Wembley while the game was on, it really is historic.

‘We’re really excited and hope England can do well, but we know that Germany has been a dangerous opponent in the past.’
