An investigation has been launched after a man’s body was found in the River Thames.

Someone spotted what looked like a body on the river bank at Chichester Wharf, in Erith, south-east London yesterday afternoon.

Paramedics and rescuers were called and they found a fully clothed man, with a hood covering his head, lying face down.

It is believed the man is in his 40s but police are still working to identify him.

The death is currently being treated as unexplained.

One local told The Sun they had called an ambulance, after hearing a woman screaming and ‘shouting for help’ while pointing to the water.

The resident said: ‘We could see the body just lying face down on the bank, the tide was out so he was clear to see

‘It was an awful thing for everyone to see and I hope the police can get to the bottom of what’s happened with the poor man.’

Rescuers were spotted transporting the body in a waiting boat before it was taken away in a body bag.

Just two weeks ago, the body of a man in his 20s was pulled from the River Thames near Hampton Court, southwest London.

He is believed to have been swimming before coming into some difficulty in the water.

Eyewitness Max Taylor, was paddle boarding nearby when the man went under the surface.

He told Sky News how a couple in a row boat told him a ‘young male’ had been calling for help while swimming in ‘waist-deep water’.

‘They said they thought he was joking as he wasn’t in deep water – seconds later he had disappeared,’ he added.
