The prime minister of Finland has tested negative for drugs after rumours of her using illegal substances spread across social media.

Sanna Marin, 36, was seen dancing at a party with celebrities in a leaked video which she said was only intended to be seen by others who attended.

After the footage went viral, she said she was upset that the videos had been shared more widely.

The videos led to speculation that she and others at the party may have taken drugs, so she submitted to a drugs test.

‘I have today taken a drug test and the results will come within a week. Never in my life have I used drugs,’ Ms Marin said on Friday.

Her office said today: ‘No narcotics were found in the prime minister’s drug test.’

She previously said: ‘I hope that in the year 2022 it’s accepted that even decision-makers dance, sing and go to parties,’ she said.

‘I didn’t wish for any images to be spread, but it’s up to the voters to decide what they think about it.’

The prime minister, who is married and has a 4-year-old daughter, became the world’s youngest serving government leader in December 2019.

She agreed on Friday to take the drug test, saying she had never taken drugs and that she had not seen anyone doing so at the party she attended.

Her office said today that the test results had come back negative.

She has previously insisted that despite being the head of Finland’s government, she’s just like anyone else her age who likes a good time with friends and family in their leisure time.

Social Democrat leader Marin also said her ability to perform her official duties had not been impaired on the Saturday night in question.

She added that she would have left the party had she been required to work.

The videos’ publication led to other women in Finland posting videos of themselves partying.

Some said the controversy was sexist, saying other world leaders have been filmed partying – such as Boris Johnson at his recent belated wedding reception – without the same scrutiny.

Mr Johnson faced major criticism for his parties in Downing Street, but because they broke Covid rules and not just because he seemed to be enjoying himself.

Some, however, claimed it was not appropriate for Ms Marin to be letting loose, particularly given neighbouring Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

The invasion promoted long-neutral Finland to apply for NATO membership.

In December last year, Ms Marin apologised for going out clubbing until 4am after missing a text message advising her to avoid social contacts due to close contact with someone infected with Covid-19.
