A spearfisher is fighting for his life after a shark attack left his arm ‘hanging off’.

Robbie Peck, who is in his thirties, suffered serious injuries after he was savaged off the Pilbara coast in Western Australia.

The father-of-three was on his boat with a friend, his brother-in-law and his four-year-old son when the shark struck.

Mr Peck’s wife, Emily, spoke of the moment she was told of the horrifying incident, saying she ‘expected the worst’.

She told 7News: ‘Just that sinking feeling in your gut and I swear all of the blood just drained from my face.

‘It’s not a phone call you ever want to get. You expect the worst straight away when you hear “shark attack”.

‘It was his last trip on the boar, last fish of the day and it happened.’

According to Mrs Peck her son was kept safe by the two other men on board.

Local Wally Galli, who is a freedive spearfishing expert, said he received a frantic call from the group after the attack, saying they were all ‘totally blindsided’ by the shark’s presence.

He said: ‘It had tried to go for the fish and misjudged its mark and bit him on the shoulder.

‘It let go and had a go at him again and bit him under the arm and on the hand.’

Emergency services rushed to scene and brought Mr Peck to the shore.

Experts from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development are investigating the incident.

They have said locals should check for shark activity using the SharkSmart website, app and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.
