Swedish activist Greta Thunberg is perhaps one of the world’s most famous environmental campaigners.
The 18-year-old captured the world’s attention at just 15 – when she went on strike from school to protest about the climate crisis in front of the Swedish Parliament.
Today, she travels the world, lending her amplified voice to the cause of saving the planet – promoting plant-based diets, participating in marches and brushing off attacks from politicians.
So, all eyes are on Greta as the UN’s two-week COP26 Climate Conference begins in Glasgow, Scotland.
Will Greta be there, will she speak or attend any rallies – and what does she make of the United Nations summit as a whole?
Here’s what we know.
Is Greta Thunberg in Glasgow to attend COP26?
Greta is expected to be at COP26 – though she hasn’t been officially invited as a guest.
The teen campaigner told broadcaster Andrew Marr that she ‘didn’t know’ – and confessed that her invite status was ‘unclear’.
‘I think that many people might be scared that if they invite too many radical young people, then that might make them look bad,’ she said in a preview for a BBC programme airing Sunday night.
Greta also confirmed on Twitter that she’ll take part in a strike happening in the city of Glasgow on Friday, November 5.
Previously, a sceptical Ms. Thunberg spoke out about how the world was ‘so far behind what we needed’ – and that COP26 was the time for straight-talk amongst leaders.
‘What I would consider to be a success [for COP26] would be honesty,’ she shared. ‘That we highlight the gap between what we are saying and what we are actually doing.
‘To change things we need to come to terms with where we’re actually at, and to sit down and just try to understand where we are. That’s not what we are doing now.’
Prior to an appearance in Glasgow, Greta participated in a rally in London on October 30 – which protested the global finance industry’s support of fossil fuels.
The activist was mobbed by fellow mask-wearing protestors as the event was packed.
She also appeared at the Fridays for Future rally in Milan, Italy on October 1 – where she gave an impassioned speech alongside 24-year-old Ugandan activist Vanessa Nakate.
Which other environmental activists will be at COP26?
It’s thought that a number of activists will descend on Glasgow from the conference start date, which is today October 31.
Planet Earth presenter Sir David Attenborough is believed to be attending, as the beloved natural historian was selected as the People’s Advocate by the United Nations.
In November, Sir David is expected to give a speech to the representatives at COP26.
Thousands of campaigners will likely join the planned Glasgow march on Friday, November 5.
Though The Queen is unable to attend, due to medical advice for the 95-year-old monarch to rest, Prince Charles and Prince William are both set to be present.
The future Kings both frequently express their concerns about the climate crisis.
And earlier in October, The Duke of Cambridge announced the five inaugural winners of the Earthshot Prize – each receiving a £1 million grant to creators of practical climate solutions.
